Bandwidth Hog![]() My GFs brother lives with us. He looks at porn constantly and I believe it sucks up all the bandwidth. I believe this because when I look at the active sessions on my DLink router its porn sites. He also uses RealPlayer to view alot of stuff from what I can see. Is there anyway I can configure the router to limit his badwidth. A setting that I can turn on and off when I need to. When hes not here and especially when his computer is off my internet is blazing fast. Ive gone in his room and shut his computer of when he wasnt home and the internet speed increases dramatically. I have had 3 plp gaming and 1 surfing on this same connection without a problem. My internet surfing speed is not really the problem its gameing online. I get pinged out of everyserver when hes here. So it would be nice to have a toggle setting to limit his bandwidth. I dont want him to be without internet but Fucking-A you cant suck up all the bandwidth. I also dont want to embarress him or my GF by confronting him about what he does on his computer. Its not my business. I just want to fucking game thats why I pay for cable internet. Venting Also any suggestions DLink model DIR-628. Im going to reset the router the next time hes not home so I can get admin and play with the settings. He uses the N wireless connection. |

Problem solved. I totally
Problem solved. I totally narrowed it down to his computer today. I was having a good round of BF2 when I got pinged out. I refresshed the server list and all the servers were 300 or above. A minute later he leaves. So I go in his room and he has 8 600+ meg files DLing at one time. So I did a test. I went to cable router and unplugged the wire for a few seconds. That timed out all of his DL and they did not restart. I refresshed the server list and all the servers pinged at 46-100.
So he comes home and about 5 mins after hes been home the same thing happens. So I pulled the plug for a few secconds again. Fixed the problem. Happens again 10 minutes later. I pull the plug again, fixes the problem. 20 minutes later he asks me if ive been having a problem witht he internet. I told him nope works perfect for me. I told him to stop DLing 10 huge files at a time and maybe it wont time out the connection. He lied to me and said he wasnt.
Since the cable router is hooked to the DLink router when I pull the cable out it dosent show a warning in app tray that the internet connection has been lost. So I can use this fix indefinately and he will never know.
In all honesty it's worth
In all honesty it's worth looking into a custom firmware for your router that allows traffic shaping. I know there are plenty out there for DLink routers. When I was using a Netgear I installed the Tomato custom firmware and that was bad ass.
It's much easier just to cap banwidth usage by IP (or mac address) than to constantly reset the router or unplug connections. It also avoids that akward conversation when he sees you pulling the cable out.
Thanks for the advice. I had
Thanks for the advice. I had no idea how to go about doing that. I reset the router, secured the wireless connection, and reset the Admin password. Im goinmg to research firmware for my D Link tonight. Now that I have Admin access to the router I can just release and renew the IP on my desktop. Has the same effect. Hes not tech savvy enough to have any idea what im doing. I told him hes overloading the router
I would do just what Solo
I would do just what Solo said..cap his download to half your full bandwidth speed via router settings and you should be good to go. Nowadays, even stock firmware sometimes has this feature.
